Downtown Bellingham is rich in restaurants and stimulating activities. From one-of-a-kind shops to restaurants inspired by tastes around the globe, there is no lack of places to visit in the sprawling city of Bellingham. These are just a few highlights within walking distance of The Leopold, Bellinghams best Retirement Community, right in the center of town.
Catch a Show
For a city of its size, Bellingham has an active theater presence. Mount Baker Theater is the center of stage performances in town, with dozens of tiny theaters dotted around it. There is always something playing at Pickford Film Center and The Limelight, two downtown theaters that show only independent films. Whether it’s song, dance, something else, or a mix of everything, there is a show for everyone to enjoy.
On bustling Railroad Avenue is a quiet little chocolate shop called Sweet Art. The traditional-style mom and pop store is truly unique with whimsical hand-made paintings along the walls. Truffles, fudge, baked goods, and other treats fill the glass display to the brim.
More of a cake person? Head to Pure Bliss just two blocks down from The Leopold for delicious cakes, bars, muffins, and more including coffee and tea. If you need a few more blocks to walk off your sugar cravings, head to Icing on The Cake for scrumptious cupcakes.
Learn Something New
To bring a little art into your day, walk to the Lightcatcher, a part of The Whatcom Museum. The oddly shaped building is named after its 180-foot-long wall that brings natural light into the building. Art and historical displays come and go, bringing in new sights every few weeks. The multi-leveled facility is equipped with an elevator in order to provide access for all. Hot tip: On the first Friday of every month, the Downtown Art Walk opens the doors for free four times a year, from 6pm to 10pm.
Take Care of Yourself
The YMCA philosophy is to promote a healthy lifestyle at every age. Whatcom Family YMCA is home to two swimming pools, a cycling room, a warm sauna, racket court, and several open spaces for a variety of activities. The facility offers general wellness classes for seniors as well as focused classes to combat Parkinson’s, diabetes, and arthritis with regular exercise.
Enjoy Fine Dining
Saltine is a small restaurant with an ever-changing menu of gourmet faire. The delectable wine and cocktail list offers something for everyone. Chef Craig and his wife, Valerie, have traveled the world and have used their rich experience to introduce new flavors to the little city they fell in love with.
Another delicious fine dining spot, Hundred North, is located right next door to The Mount Baker Theater. They specialize in seasonal modern American cuisine, focusing on local and sustainable ingredients.
